World Patient Safety Day 17th September
World patient safety day takes place on Tuesday the 17th September, This year the theme is improving diagnosis for patient safety, with the slogan of “Get it right, make it safe!”
Diagnostic safety is a critical aspect of patient safety as it directly impacts the accuracy and timeliness of diagnosis, which are essential for effective treatment and patient outcomes. Failures in the diagnostic process, such as missed, delayed, or incorrect diagnoses, can lead to inappropriate treatments, prolonged illness, or even patient harm.
‘World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety. The Day brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety.’
Key Campaign Messages
This day is to bring awareness into the full patient experience from all healthcare providers. Some of the key messages from this years campaign of improving diagnosis are:
Correct and timely diagnosis is the first step to preventative interventions and effective treatment.
Understanding the diagnostic process is key to reducing errors.
A range of solutions are available to address diagnostic errors.
Diagnosis is a team effort.
The day is celebrated by many activities including national campaigns, events, social media, and more. However the signature mark of the campaign is lighting up landmarks, monuments and public places with an orange light.
Prioritising diagnostic safety is essential for preventing harm, enhancing patient trust, and improving healthcare outcomes. Without it, the entire patient care continuum can be compromised.
