The Wings for Life World Run is a unique charity event held in multiple locations across the world. This event was set up by the international not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation, Wings for Life. Their mission is to find a cure for spinal core injury. By funding world-class scientific research and clinical trials around the globe, the Wings for Life foundation hopes to achieve this aim.

Event Information: Wings for Life World Run

The Wings for Life World Run takes place on May 8th at 12:00pm. This event is open to all running abilities and to persons of all ages. It takes place across multiple locations worldwide simultaneously. There is no set race distance, time or finish line. The main message of the day is to have fun and to run in aid of spinal cord research.

What makes this charity race so unique is how the race is structured. Each participant begins at the exact same time across the globe and is given a half hour start ahead of a Catcher car. The participants' aim is to out run the Catcher cars. The last female and male participant to be passed out by the Catcher car in each location are declared the winners.

The Dublin route begins in Dun Laoghaire town and moves south towards Dalkey Island and Greystones. The route will close around Wicklow town before finishing up in Brittas Bay. Refreshment stations are located at every 5km along the route, and DART tickets will be issued to any participants that finish the race within 20km of the starting line. For anyone who finishes past the 20km point, a free shuttle bus service will be provided.

Tips for enjoying the event

The most important thing to remember on the day is to not over exert yourself. Run at a pace that is comfortable for your fitness level and if you start to feel either weak or lightheaded during the race, make sure to stop and rest.

Making sure that you stay well hydrated and energised during the race is vital. Drink plenty of water before and after the race to replenish any nutrients that were lost during the day. Energy gels can be beneficial during the race to give you an extra boost. But only take these if you have tried them out during training. Alternatively, a banana or jelly may give you the energy boost you need.
